Conference and Simultaneous Interpreting

Simultaneous interpreting – as the name suggests – involves the interpreter translating into or from a foreign language without interrupting the speaker Unlike consecutive interpreting, the speaker does not pause during simultaneous interpreting to allow time for translation Simultaneous interpreting is the most widely used, but also the most demanding.

Only highly experienced interpreters, such as those in our team, with a deep understanding of the language, can successfully manage a full day of simultaneous interpreting.

How many interpreters are required?

Typically, at least one interpreter is required. However, determining the exact number of interpreters depends on understanding what simultaneous interpreting implies. Simultaneous interpreting is an extremely demanding process mastered by relatively limited number of interpreters. The speaker does not pause and continues speaking without interruption. This means that, while the speaker is talking, the interpreter must:

  • follow the speaker
  • translate mentally
  • deliver the translation into the microphone and
  • (the most demanding part) continue listening while speaking into the microphone.

This makes simultaneous interpreting a highly demanding and complex task. It demands intense concentration and can quickly become exhausting for the interpreter.

When is simultaneous interpreting required?

Simultaneous interpreting is typically used at conferences and summits (headset-based interpreting), as well as in smaller discussions where only a few participants require translation (whispered/chouchoutage interpreting). In this case, the interpreter will be positioned close to the participants who do not understand the language. No headset or special sound setup is required.

An experienced interpreter will aim to convey not only the meaning, but also the intention and emotions behind the speaker’s message. In essence, the result represents an intermediate stage in the communication process. This enables listeners in the target language to grasp the message much like those who understand the original language. Experienced simultaneous interpreters go beyond words, conveying ideas, meaning and emotion.

Therefore, cultural awareness and subject-matter expertise play a crucial role.

Consecutive Interpreting

In consecutive interpreting, the speaker pauses at regular intervals, allowing the translator/interpreter to translate what has been said. Typically, the speaker pauses after each sentence or phrase.

While this approach takes more time, it results in a more accurate and complete translation. This is due to the fact that the interpreter has more time to process and deliver the translation. Unlike simultaneous interpreting, this method does not require the interpreter to “compress” the message, which is often necessary in simultaneous settings.

When is consecutive interpreting required?

  • in business meetings and conversations;
  • during contract signings at a notary’s office;
  • in dealings with public authorities, such as ANAF or the Civil Registry;
  • for phone calls and remote interpreting;
  • when opening bank accounts or applying for loans;
  • when accompanying foreign clients during their travels within the country, including guided visits.

Simply tell us the key details of your project and we will provide you with the best possible quote. We are confident you will be satisfied with the result, as you will benefit from some of the most advanced consecutive interpreting services available today.

Telephone interpreting

When the interpreter’s physical presence is not essential, we provide a convenient and cost-effective solution: telephone interpreting. This type of interpreting is best suited when modern communication tools are available to all participants.
